"As with most cranes, the parents mate for life.  Both the female and male take turns in raising their young. What I was hoping to illustrate in this painting is thecare and attention that the parent whooping cranes give to their young chick.  The mother here is seen preparing the nights nesting place as the father stands as sentinel."

Whopping Cranes Titled "Bedding Down". This image was commissioned by the Printing Association of Florida in 2006. Poceeds of the sale of the original painting went to "Operation Migration". Whooping Cran eggs are hatched at the U.S.G.S.'s Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Maryland.  When the chicks are ready for flight, Operation Migration begins. POperation Migration pilots led the class of captive-raised whooping cranes imprinted to follow their mother (an ultralight aircraft). The trip (a1250 mile journey) from the northern nesting grounds in Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, south to their winter home at the Chassahowitzka National Refuge in Homosassa, Florida.
